Jewelry that does not tarnish is made from metals that do not react with air, moisture, or skin: surgical stainless steel, titanium, platinum, and solid gold at 14k and above. Everything else tarnishes eventually, and the base metal decides how fast.
Why jewelry tarnishes in the first place
Tarnish is a chemical reaction, not dirt. Copper, brass, and sterling silver react with oxygen, sulphur compounds in air, and the salts in sweat, forming a dull or dark layer on the surface. The reaction is unavoidable in those metals. You can slow it with storage and polishing, but you cannot stop it, because it is the metal itself doing the reacting.
Metals that genuinely do not tarnish
| Metal | Tarnishes? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Surgical stainless steel | No | Chromium forms a stable passive layer that self repairs |
| Titanium | No | Same passivation effect, extremely inert |
| Solid gold 14k and above | Essentially no | Gold does not oxidise; only the alloy content can react |
| Platinum | No | Chemically stable, develops a patina rather than tarnish |
| Sterling silver | Yes, quickly | Copper content reacts with sulphur in air |
| Brass and bronze | Yes | Copper alloys oxidise readily, and mark skin green |
| Gold plated brass | Yes, once plating wears | The brass underneath is exposed and reacts |

The plating trap
This is where most people get caught. A gold plated piece does not tarnish while the plating is intact, because you are only touching gold. But plating is measured in microns and wears at contact points: clasps, ring shanks, the back of a pendant. Once it wears through, whatever is underneath starts reacting. So the question is never really "does this tarnish", it is "what is underneath the gold, and what happens when I reach it".
How to tell before you buy
Look for the base metal named explicitly. "Surgical stainless steel", "316L", or "solid 14k" are specific claims. "Gold tone", "fashion metal", or an unnamed base almost always means brass. If a listing describes the plating but never the base, that omission is the answer.
What non tarnishing jewelry actually costs
Less than people assume. Because stainless steel is inexpensive as a raw material, the price of a non tarnishing piece is driven by design and plating quality rather than the metal itself. That is why waterproof, tarnish free jewelry sits comfortably under $50 while solid gold does not.

Frequently Asked Questions
What jewelry never tarnishes?
Surgical stainless steel, titanium, platinum, and solid gold at 14k and above. These metals do not react with air, moisture, or skin, so there is no chemical reaction to cause tarnish.
Does gold plated jewelry tarnish?
Not while the plating is intact, because you are only touching gold. Once the plating wears through at clasps or contact points, whatever base metal is underneath starts reacting. Over stainless steel that is fine; over brass it tarnishes and can mark skin.
Why does sterling silver tarnish so fast?
Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The copper reacts with sulphur compounds in air, which is what forms the dark layer. Polishing removes it but the reaction repeats.
Is Ezra Gems jewelry really waterproof?
Yes. Every piece is 18K gold plated over surgical stainless steel, a non reactive base that does not corrode in water, chlorine, or salt. You can shower, swim, sweat, and sleep in it.
Will it turn my skin green?
No. There is no copper or brass touching your skin, only surgical stainless steel under the gold plating, so it will not leave green marks or discoloration.
Is it hypoallergenic and nickel free?
Yes. Every piece is nickel free and free of lead and cadmium, made for sensitive skin and ears that react to ordinary gold tone jewelry.
